Dear Applicant,

Congratulations! This email is being sent to inform you that your
application was accepted to take part in the Summer of Code.

This means that in my second year in the Google Summer of Code program I will work on a WYSIWYG-style editor for Mallard documents (codename Foie Gras). Buddhika Laknath Semage was also accepted for this project, that’s why we also had the first meeting with our mentors (Don Scorgie for Buddhika and Shaun McCance for me) – result: the visual editor widget will be developed by Buddhika, and I will work on the application shell (that includes UI design, Subversion support, sending patches for review, translating, etc).

I’m looking forward to working for the GNOME project.

(Note: I will still continue my contributions to bzr-gtk – mainly focusing on items in my GSoC proposal. The Bazaar Sprint in London will be a great opportunity to hack on these features.)

Olive 0.1 hits Edgy

Just got the news that Olive 0.1 was accepted into the Universe repository of Edgy. The binary package name is olive. Thanks for all who helped to upload this one to the archives!

I was also pleased to receive the first contributions to the source code. Thanks to Stéphane Raimbault, the setup.py script has the ability to install the .po files to their appropriate place. (Available in the latest ‘main‘ branch.)

Summer of Code is officially over. I’ve decided to release the current codebase to the public for more testing.

Olive on Win32: works!

I have some great news to tell :). It seems that Olive works pretty well in Win32 environment. I could get it running after a few tweaks (just had to fix some paths as usual). Kudos to all the Win32 porters of Python, GTK/Glade, PyGTK, PyCairo, and of course the Bazaar team :)

SWR #11: August 7-13

Here come the highlights of the last week. First I took the icons which I got from Mario, and played with them in Inkscape. You can see the result on the new main window:

After that I implemented the Bookmark functionality of Olive. You can see that on the screenshot above :). Some missing file operations were also implemented. See the pictures (Make directory, Rename, Move):

The Informations window got also implemented (imitates the ‘bzr info’ output), and bzrk was integrated into Olive:

I had a trip to Budapest on Saturday, so I decided to take my PDA with me. Before the departure, I copied the GNOME HIG 2.0 HTML version to the SD card, so I had something to read :). The UI was modified to be HIG-compilant. You can also note those changes on the screenshots, but the message dialogs were also updated (they have a primary and a secondary text now, the latter describes the situation in more detail and gives some advice).

SWR #10: July 31 – August 6

The weeks are passing by so quickly. There are only 2 of them left!

After coming back from holiday, I’ve separated the Branch and Checkout functionality, so there are two dialogs now:

Several bugs were also fixed:

#54015: Visual feedback when olive is busy would be cool
#54019: Branch and checkout in same UI interface?
#54676: Push window doesn’t resize
#54698: Number of pushed revisions not shown

A small change was made to the Commit dialog: the local commit checkbox appears only if the actual branch is a checkout.

A big step forward to a user friendly interface is the implementation of context menus. Now there is one in the browsing area :). A Statistics menu was also added, where you can find the following items: Differences (diff), Log, Informations (info). The Differences window was implemented. Another new feature is the file status summary. It can be found under Branch/Status. See the following screenshots.

I have worked only on the first two days of the week. The Commit dialog got a new face (see last post), and some initially reported bugs were fixed.

You can check out the current bugs here. Feel free to report even feature requests.

The other 5 days were about summer and partying ;) I’ve spent those days at the “Hungarian Sea”, called Lake Balaton. I was really surprised by the cleanness and the many rebuilt stuff. The city of Balatonf�red is a very good place to say with two beaches and many small restaurants and some great clubs.

Revamped commit window

After several discussions on IRC with LarstiQ (Wouter van Heyst) and Jelmer Vernooij, I revamped the commit dialog. It features now a file list, where you can select which files you want to commit. Here’s the shot:

Yeah, it has been two months since I got accepted into Summer of Code. I have to tell you, that this week was the most productive one regarding eye candy :). A lot of GUI functionality was implemented, so I put up screenshots instead of a short ChangeLog.

The big white space on the left side of the main window will become a Bookmark section once implemented. There will be also some more stats on files (last changed at least), and the display of hidden files will be disabled by default.

Please file your feature request either in the comments or in Launchpad (the latter is more appreciated since it won’t get eaten by various spam filters).

The last week was a pretty productive one :). I got news from Brian Davis that he is using the Olive backend code for his projects (but it will be replaced later, because he’s working on a SCM-indepentent stuff). Mario sent me his mid-term mentor survey about me, and I was really happy to see that he’s satisfied with my work so far. I’m trying to work hard not to disappoint him…

I’ve hacked on a GtkUIFactory and GtkProgressBar implementation for bzrlib almost every day. The former was successfully finished, but I have some problems with the latter. Those will be investigated when Mario comes back from his 4-day holiday (enjoy ;)).

The backend code is ready, so I’ve began to design and implement the GUI for Olive. Some initial code is available from the Launchpad Bazaar branch, I’ll put up some screenshots as soon as I can show you some real stuff :)
